How to calculate the premium step by step

In most societies accident insurance premium is calculated by multiplying the selected sum insured by the tariff rate and taking into account discounts or surcharges. In some tariffs, the rate is expressed as an amount „per PLN 1,000 of sum insured,” while in others it is expressed as a percentage (e.g., 0.20–0.40% of sum insured per year). Below are the most important steps in the calculation.

1) Specify the sum insured for accident insurance

The sum insured (SI) is the upper limit of liability. In accident insurance, 1% of the SI is usually paid for each 1% of permanent disability. Example: with an SI of PLN 50,000 and 10% of disability, the benefit will amount to PLN 5,000. In selected variants, progressive benefits are also applied in the case of high damage.

2) Select the variant and scope

The basic coverage includes permanent disability and death as a result of an accident. The extensions cover the costs of accident insurance treatment (visits, tests, medications, medical transport) and assistance services after an accident. Different variants mean different rates.

If you want to organize concepts and variants, see the guide. how to choose accident insurance.

3) List the risk factors.

Age, type of work, sports practiced (recreational or competitive), previous claims, and the period of coverage may increase or decrease the premium. Some professions and sports require surcharges.

What affects the accident insurance premium?

Several factors influence the premium amount. The key ones are the sum insured under accident insurance, the type of benefits, the duration of coverage, and tariff factors. Below is a brief list.

  • Sum Insured: The higher the SU, the higher the premium.
  • Variant and scope: Packages that include medical expenses and assistance are more expensive.
  • Age and profession: increases for risky occupations and age groups.
  • Sports: surcharges for contact, extreme, and competitive sports.
  • Protection period: A shorter period usually means a lower total premium.
  • Damage: Your payment history may affect your rate.

Examples of premium calculations

Example 1 – percentage rate. You choose SU PLN 50,000, basic option (injury + death). The tariff rate is 0.25% SU per year. Calculation: PLN 50,000 × 0.0025 = PLN 125 annual premium. If you add the costs of accident insurance and assistance, the rate may increase, e.g., to 0.35% – then the premium will be approx. PLN 175.

Example 2 – flat rate for PLN 1,000 SU. Tariff: PLN 0.60 for every PLN 1,000 of insured value in the basic option. For an insured value of PLN 80,000, we calculate: 80 × PLN 0.60 = PLN 48 per year. Extending the coverage to include medical expenses may increase the rate to PLN 1.10/PLN 1,000 of insured value, which amounts to PLN 88 per year.

How does the payment of benefits work? As a standard, 1% of permanent disability is paid out as 1% SU (e.g., with SU of PLN 80,000 and 12% of disability, you will receive PLN 9,600). In some progressive variants, above a certain threshold, the percentage of disability is multiplied by a coefficient (e.g., ×2), which increases the payout for more severe injuries.

How to choose the right SU

Choosing accident insurance sum, relate it to the actual costs: rehabilitation, private visits, possible time off work. For active people (cycling, contact sports), it is worth considering higher SU and extensions. On the other hand, for office jobs, the basic option with SU modification may be reasonable.

If you are looking for a quick estimate: SU 30,000–50,000 PLN for basic coverage, 60,000–100,000 PLN for those who actively participate in sports or expect higher benefits. Remember that a higher SU increases the premium, but also increases the actual payout for damages.
