Does Europe Assistance cover the costs?
Foreigners are increasingly asking whether Europe Assistance covers all medical costs in Poland and the Schengen area. This is important, because an unplanned visit to the hospital can sometimes be very expensive. In this article, we explain what the real scope of coverage is, when the policy covers medical expenses and when the company may refuse. You'll also find practical tips and links to resources to help you choose the right policy.
What insurance covers in practice
Europe Assistance (correctly: Europ Assistance) offers coverage for medical expenses in the event of a sudden illness or accident. Standard coverage includes outpatient consultations and treatment, hospitalization, purchase of medicines and bandages, and medical transportation. Emergency dental care, medical repatriation and transport of the deceased are also available. In Schengen variants, typical limits are €30,000 or €60,000, while in policies for foreigners residing in Poland, limits can be selected, usually from €10,000 to €50,000.
Treatment costs and limits
The insurer covers reasonable and necessary medical expenses up to the sum insured. This is the upper limit of liability. Important: many benefits require prior approval of the Emergency Center and organization of assistance by the insurer. Incurring the expense yourself without contact may result in denial of reimbursement. Before choosing a policy, check whether the variant covers chronic diseases, as this is often a separate limit or extension.
Assistance and transportation
Assistance provides 24-hour contact, treatment arrangements, medical translation and logistical support. If necessary, the company will arrange transportation to a facility, repatriation to the country of permanent residence or continuation of travel after treatment. If you are comparing options, see our comparison Europe Assistance, which explains the differences in limits and services.
💡 Tip
Always call the Emergency Center before incurring expenses. Failure to do so may mean denial of reimbursement.
What the policy doesn't cover
No insurance covers all medical expenses. You'll find exclusions of liability in Europ Assistance's T&Cs. The most common are planned treatment and procedures, prophylaxis, rehabilitation, treatment in sanatoriums, dental prosthetics, costs after alcohol consumption or high-risk sports without extension. Coverage also does not work in sanctioned countries or outside the specified policy territory.
Typical exclusions and limitations
If you are planning a visa trip, check the required coverage for the visa and the minimum amount of insurance. It will be helpful to review the requirements in the article insurance for Schengen visa. We describe the differences between a visa and permanent residency here: visa vs. residence card.
Foreigners in Poland: options and advice
A „foreigners” medical expenses" variant with assistance services is available for foreigners traveling in Poland. It covers sudden illness, accidents, hospitalization, diagnostics and purchase of medicines up to the amount indicated in the policy. In some of the offers you will find an extension for chronic diseases, which is sometimes crucial for longer stays. Remember to keep medical records and receipts, as you will need them to settle medical expenses.
How to use your policy effectively
In an emergency, first contact the Emergency Center, provide your policy number and describe your symptoms. Follow the consultant's instructions. When this is not possible, gather all documentation, receipts and report the damage as soon as possible. If you plan to stay temporarily, get to know the list of offers that meet the authority's requirements: insurance for residence card. This will make it easier to choose the coverage and sum assured.
ℹ️ Remember
The policy does not cover all expenses. Check the T&Cs: amounts, limits, territory and exclusions of liability.
Summary and next steps
To answer directly: Europe Assistance does not cover all medical expenses for foreigners. Instead, it covers necessary costs in emergencies, up to the sum insured and in accordance with the T&Cs. Limits, territory, Emergency Center approval and exclusions are key.
