Insurance for a short-term Schengen visa must meet the documentation requirements—it is not enough for the word „visa” to appear in its name. The most important requirements are: at least 30,000 EUR in coverage, validity throughout the Schengen area, coverage for the entire required period, and coverage for emergency medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation. It is also important to distinguish between travel insurance for a Schengen visa and health insurance for a foreign national intended exclusively for a stay in Poland. These products may look similar on the application form, but they have different territorial coverage and cannot always be used interchangeably.
The Four Requirements of the Schengen Visa
In accordance with Information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding visas Travel medical insurance must be valid throughout the Schengen Area and cover the entire duration of the planned stay or transit. The minimum coverage amount is 30,000 EUR, and the policy should cover expenses related to medical repatriation, emergency medical care, urgent hospitalization, or death.
A total of at least 30,000 EUR
You can find a more detailed explanation of this requirement in the material on a total of 30,000 EUR in visa insurance.
The document must clearly state the amount in euros or a value that unambiguously meets the required minimum. The premium itself, the name of the plan, or the general term „medical expenses” do not confirm the amount.
The entire Schengen Area
A policy limited to Poland or a single destination country does not guarantee coverage throughout the Schengen Area. Check the „territory” field, the certificate, and the General Terms and Conditions. Do not assume that the insurer will extend the coverage based on your planned itinerary.
Full required period
The dates must correspond to the period for which the policy is required. Check the start and end dates of coverage, not just the number of days listed in the summary.
Repatriation and Emergency Medical Treatment
The document or certificate should demonstrate the required coverage. If repatriation, hospitalization, or emergency medical care are not explicitly listed, you must obtain appropriate confirmation from the seller or insurer. You must not add coverage details on your own.
Dates and Territories: Examples
One trip: October 10–24
The period from October 10 to October 24 spans 15 calendar days. If the itinerary specifies arrival on October 10 and departure on October 24, the document should cover both of those days as well as any transit time. A policy that begins on October 11 or ends on October 23 leaves a gap in coverage.
Transfer in another Schengen country
A person is flying to Poland via an airport in Germany. A policy limited exclusively to Poland does not comply with the provision covering the entire Schengen Area and may not cover incidents that occur during a layover. The territory covered should be specified in the document, regardless of where the traveler plans to spend most of their stay.
Multiple-entry visa
For a multiple-entry visa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the insurance should cover the period of the first planned visit. Before purchasing the policy, compare the dates of that visit with the start and end dates of coverage listed in the policy.
Change of Flight Date
Postponing a trip does not automatically change the policy dates. Before submitting your documents, check the amendment procedure, and after making the change, download a new confirmation. The information in the application, reservation, and policy should be consistent.
The Schengen Insurance Policy and KLC in Poland
Don't combine these procedures automatically—check Differences Between Visa Insurance and Residence Card Insurance.
This is the most common source of misunderstandings. Travel insurance for a short-term Schengen visa is intended to provide coverage throughout the Schengen Area. Insurance covering a foreign national’s medical expenses, however, may apply only to a stay within Poland.
The 2026 General Terms and Conditions of the TUZ KLC policy cover medical expenses for foreign nationals during their stay in Poland. Therefore, this policy is not automatically equivalent to the insurance required throughout the Schengen Area. When choosing a policy, first check its intended purpose, and then compare the coverage area, dates, coverage limit, and scope of emergency assistance.
⚠️ Important
A policy limited to Poland does not provide the required coverage throughout the Schengen Area. Always check the coverage area specified in the document, even if the product name includes the words „visa” or „for foreigners.”.
Practical rule:
Two KLC Products: Protection in Emergencies
Documentation requirements and the scope of coverage are two separate issues. The document must be tailored to the territory, period, and coverage amount required by the specific procedure. The scope of assistance in the event of a sudden illness or an accident, however, should be assessed based on the specific policy and its General Terms and Conditions.

Compensa
Product/document: Compensa Foreigner.
Version: Please confirm the document's validity period before purchasing.
Confirmed parameter: Medical expenses in Poland are related to a sudden illness or an accident; the document lists inpatient treatment, surgeries, and specific types of transportation.

What to Compare Before Buying
For both products, you must verify the coverage area, dates, coverage limit, definitions of sudden illness and accidental injury, and the rules regarding hospitalization, medical transport, and repatriation. You must also confirm whether the document issued meets the requirements of a specific visa or residence card application. The common name “KLC” does not imply identical coverage, and a policy limited to Poland must not be equated with coverage valid throughout the Schengen Area without additional confirmation.
How to Check a Document Before Submitting an Application
A list of explanations is also useful, What kind of insurance is required for a visa to Poland?.

- Check the exact start and end dates of the liability period.
- Identify the territory and demand an unambiguous provision covering the entire Schengen Area.
- Check the total amount—at least 30,000 EUR.
- Confirm urgent medical care, emergency hospitalization, and repatriation.
- Check whether there are limits on individual benefits within the total insurance coverage.
- Read the guidelines for contacting the emergency call center and obtaining prior authorization for transport.
- Check the requirements of the relevant consulate and the current checklist of documents.
- Keep your policy, general terms and conditions, certificate, and assistance number in both digital and paper form.
What to Do in an Emergency
In a situation that threatens your health or life, call for help first. Once the insured person’s condition allows it, contact the emergency center listed in the policy. Provide the policy number, the insured person’s information, your location, and a brief description of the incident. Coordinate further actions in accordance with the procedure outlined in your policy.
Keep the information sheet from the hospital, the incident report, the accident report, transportation receipts, and payment confirmations. Under the TUZ policy, transportation to your country of permanent residence requires prior approval, and transportation arranged on your own is subject to the terms and limits described in the General Terms and Conditions. For other policies, check the specific procedure for that policy.
FAQ
Is every KLC policy valid for a Schengen visa?
No. KLC coverage may be limited to stays in Poland. For a short-term Schengen visa, the document must confirm coverage throughout the entire Schengen Area. Before purchasing, compare the guidelines in the guide. What type of insurance should you choose for a Schengen visa in 2026?.
Is 30,000 EUR enough without checking the scope?
No. The total amount is only one of the requirements. Territory, dates, emergency assistance, hospitalization, and repatriation are equally important.
Is a policy limited to Poland sufficient if the destination of the trip is Poland?
You should not assume this is the case with a short-term Schengen visa. The official requirements specify that the visa must be valid throughout the Schengen Area, even if the majority of your stay is in Poland.
What validity period should be specified for a multiple-entry visa?
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the insurance must cover the period of your first planned visit. Compare the dates on the policy with your travel and transit plans.
Can I change the date on a document myself?
Do not change the date manually. After changing your travel dates, review the adjustment procedure and obtain a document with the correct coverage period.
Can medical transportation be arranged without the insurer's consent?
In an emergency, the first thing you should do is call for help. Under the TUZ policy, onward transportation to your country of permanent residence requires prior approval, and the rules for reimbursement are set forth in the General Terms and Conditions. If you have a different policy, check the procedure in its documentation.
